The range of production of agricultural chemicals in Bangladesh is very small, but the range of imports is wide. The level of import depends on the comparison of cultivation each year. Bangladesh is an agricultural country where a significant portion of the population depends on agriculture for their livelihoods. Agriculture chemicals, including pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides, are imported to meet the country’s agricultural demands. Here are a few reasons why Bangladesh imports agriculture chemicals.

According to Bangladesh Fertilizer Association (BFA) and USDA 2022, the annual demand of Bangladesh for chemical fertilizers is about 6 million metric tons, of which about 80% are to be imported. Bangladesh government imports four major chemical fertilizers Urea, Diammonium Phosphate (DAP), Triple Super Phosphate (TSP), and Muri ate of Potash (MOP).

The country only produces 1 million metric tons of Urea and only 0.1 million metric tons of TSP every year. The rest of the demands for Urea are met by importing from UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar and TSP from Morocco, and Tunisia.
