Islamic Perspective

Bangladesh is mainly a Muslim country. Modern infertility treatments, which are commonly known as “Test Tube Baby,” there are often questions among Muslim couples or their families. The main focus is on “Test Tube Baby,” which involves treatment methods like IVF, IUI, ICSI, etc. Is this considered Halal or Haram according to Islamic principles?
Al-Azhar University or the Fatwa Committee of Al-Azhar is a prominent international authority for Muslims worldwide. The Al-Azhar authorities issued a fatwa in 1980 declaring that techniques such as Test Tube Baby or IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and similar technologies are permissible or approved from an Islamic perspective, as long as they are not associated with the involvement of third-party sperm, ovum, embryo, or uterus outside of the marital relationship.
Therefore, we understand that if a couple is unable to conceive due to natural reasons, they can seek guidance from specialized doctors according to Islamic Sharia. Following the expert’s advice, they can opt for appropriate medical methods like IVF, IUI, ICSI, and others to have a child. In this case, there is no religious barrier in Islam.
